About PayReckoner

PayReckoner is a free UK salary calculator and toolkit for everything that affects your pay in pounds sterling. Enter your salary (yearly, monthly, weekly, daily or hourly) and see exactly what goes to income tax, National Insurance, student loan and pension, and what lands in your bank account.

It covers Scotland's six income tax bands, every student loan plan, the three ways of paying into a pension, tax codes and the £100,000 allowance taper, and goes beyond payslips: pension projections and the State Pension, maternity, sick and redundancy pay, and tax for employers, sole traders and company directors.

Every rate comes from HMRC, DWP or GOV.UK, and the methodology page shows each one with its source. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere. More about us

FAQ

How is UK take-home pay calculated?

Start with gross pay, take off any salary sacrifice, then income tax on pay above your tax-free Personal Allowance (£12,570 in 2026/27), employee National Insurance at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above, student loan repayments and pension contributions. What's left is your take-home pay.

How much is £30,000 a year after tax?

About £25,119.60 a year, or £2,093.30 a month, in England, Wales or Northern Ireland in 2026/27 with no pension or student loan.

Does PayReckoner work for Scotland?

Yes. Choose Scotland (or enter an S tax code) and the Scottish income tax bands are used. National Insurance, student loans and statutory pay are the same across the UK.

Is PayReckoner free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up. Results are estimates for guidance and not financial or tax advice.

These are estimates based on 2026/27 rates and the inputs you give. Your actual position can differ (other income, benefits in kind, tax code changes, scheme rules). This is not financial or tax advice.
